What a Dollar in Prevention Saves.
I want to tell you about Maria.
Two years ago, she walked into our Pathways to Wellness program with something that doesn't show up on an intake form... the exhausting weight of watching her health decline and not knowing how to stop it. High cholesterol. Prediabetes. Two conditions that, left unmanaged, have a well-documented way of reshaping a family's entire future - missed work, mounting medical bills, a parent less able to care for her children. Sadly, she's not unusual.
What happened next is why I believe so deeply in this work.
At Pathways, Maria learned to cook differently, move her body, and ask her doctor hard questions she was previously too intimidated to ask. As a result, her cholesterol is back to normal. She's teaching her kids what she's learning. And she shared recently that the most valuable thing Pathways gives her is simply "the way I feel at the end of the day."
I think about that line a lot.
Because here's what I know: chronic disease doesn't just affect individuals - it quietly hollows out families and communities. It drains household income, crowds emergency rooms, and robs parents of the energy and presence their children need. The research is unambiguous. Prevention works. And it costs a fraction of what we pay in human suffering when we don't invest in it.
Every year, your support helps us intervene in the lives of hundreds of Marias.
She is one person; but she's also a mother passing new habits to her children, a woman who now advocates for herself in a medical system that can be intimidating.
That ripple - from one woman to her family to her community - is exactly what your generosity makes possible. You're not just helping someone eat better. You're helping break a cycle that, without intervention, tends to repeat itself generation after generation and weakens communities.
It's your kindness that keeps the doors open for the next Maria who walks in. Thank you.
